Re: Free Bible to whomever wants one

It is an Irish custom ( my last name is murphy lol ) and its called a Wake. Traditionally it is held at the home with the deceased present. Everyone brings food and drink. If the passing was expected it can be a huge party as people will have had time to [sign in to see URL] ( if circumstnces allow) the deceased is in their casket and the casket is open. Its the family and friends last time to farewell the person before burial. You greet the family hand your gift of food and drink to the host( usualy a close family friend who takes this burden of arrangement from the bereft)and make your way to pay respect to the dead. Everyone talks of the deceased usually through funny annecdotes. Once everyone is there you eat a meal the persons last on earth and then party till late its a sending off type party . Usually the food donated is way more than can be eaten in one night its a way of making sure the family has enough to sustane them for the next week or so as they deal with their grief.

I kind of miss Wakes our world has sanitised death to much it seems .

Re: Free Bible to whomever wants one

I got involved with a newly planted church in my area during the summer. We just "launched" 7 weeks ago and I'm blown away and blessed by just how much God does in our community.

I've never seen anything like it.
We have a family who started coming a while ago. The Father just came home from jail, feeling a pull to get his life together. He decided to give Christ the chance to drive his life. Well, over the month they've been coming, they come to find out that Daddy coming home is not supported by the county.
They get an eviction from their housing because one more adult is too many, they get welfare and foodstamps cut. Mom (Christina) calling around town for homeless shelters she and her family can stay in, being told they are at capacity.

They're in the middle of talking to the pastors wife about how they are still not sure where they will be in 2 weeks. An older couple calls over Mrs. Pastor(she's pretty much our community service coordinator), not having heard or having been aware of her other conversation, and let her know that they have a large house, or an extra house or some such, and want to get involved with providing housing.... to homeless families. O_O
Just one example of many we have going on of needs><meeting of needs coming together in a fast and clear way lately.

And Christina (the same one) thanks you for the bible btw Brandon emoticon

That's awesome! I highly reccomend the experience of being part of a new church. As I recall, Alaska also used to be pretty largely unchurched?

oh, my church group is moving out of a old shared church into our personal church.

the second part, I have no clue, depends on what time you count, before we became a state, or after, before the gold rush, or after.

Bout 10 years ago or so a church my dad went to supported an Alaska missionary, had an HQ in Anchorage.

My church is doing the building rental thing now, but the building we are renting has more space than the other congregation can even use. There's a gym and about two floors of classrooms that are totally untouched and unused so we get to leave our stuff up. (yay!)

.... I have learned and forgotten Algebra since I met the guy, sorry Zalabar emoticon

Update on the not quite-homeless family I mentioned; I had the privilege to buy their dryer, and as far as I know they are all set to move into the elderly couple's furnished basement.

On a similar but different topic How close is Berkley to you Brandon? We have a sister church starting up on the campus I believe. Our pastor and that pastor are comparing notes lately. Don't be suprised if you're seeing stuff around that's targeted to teach people what all this Christ-following business is about.

In fact a random junk mail card is how I found my church. (We emailed them to make sure they wern't a cult.)

I'm really close, actually. Just a ten minute walk away from campus.
