New to the website, and writing.

Hello everyone! This would be my first post. I'm new to the sight and would love to say hello to everyone. Anyway, I've always wanted to write, but I can never seem to get the idea in my mind onto the paper in a clear way. I think it would help to try to write something based on an already existing story. (I.E. Fanfiction, but not concerning the main characters of the main story, just set in the same world.) Any ideas? I would appreciate any tips or advice you could give me, as I am new to writing. Thanks all! emoticon

First, welcome to the forums.

Second, when writing, find your niche. For me, I like to write an outline.

Try some free form writing to warm up.

Think of a topic, and write. NO NONONONONONONONO corrections, regardless of what you have on paper (or type)

Get your idea down, then go fix it.

yeah, that's kind of it, I personally sit and think on the computer for a bit, The mind is a powerful tool to use, and when I get any type of Idea, I write it down in my note pad, then one day, if I have time, I get one of my notes, and brainstorm on it while typing my ideas, you might get a fair start there.

beginning a story is the hard part, once you get rolln' you won't stop unless you want to.

I agree with the advice of just writing until it hurts. That's the only way you'll get anything ever written. Just be sure to understand that your story will suck until you have a chance to revise it. Writing is like sculpting, only you have to make the stone to carve from.

Oh, I've got another metaphor.

Chase your character up a tree and throw rocks at him. Make sure there's a lot of conflict, conflict is what drives the story.

I could go on and on about creative writing, but I won't, seeing as there's a video of dancing kittens I've only watched twice.

I know that when I do my writing I like to have a semi-formed picture of my story's characters and a few vague ideas for plot twists before I start. Then I just start. Simple as that. I don't go over what I've written until I'm finished, I just write until I feel that the story has ended. Then I revise, rewrite, revise again and again until I'm happy.

Alright, thank you everyone. After considering what you have said, I'm pretty sure I'm going to write a short story about my character's past. Thanks you for all the help and welcomes.

oh yeah... I heard someone once say

"once you finish the story, scrap it, or store it somewhere and start completely over, it'll make your story better X5" or something like that.

Or, if practised enough, unfinished.

I tend to draw a mind map where I list the plot, the characters, the surroundings and describe them with a few words. Then I usually write a harsh description of the milieu after which I write the end of the story. This helps me to plan the plot accurately enough as I then know where I want the story to take itself to. It also gives me time to think more profoundly about the beginning, as I think it is the most important part of the story, it has to take a hold of the reader. After the ending is on the paper I write the actual story. Sometimes I may change the ending I intended if I get a better idea while writing.

After the writing phase it has to be stored away from my eyes. I have found that two weeks is a good enough time to strip me from self-satisfaction. After this time I am fully capable of examining my own writing critically. Having waited this time, I start revising. This is a phase of which length can extend from one evening's sitting to months - the only correct time is the time it takes to be happy with it.

---
"But someone's going to help those people, right?"
"That's not important right now, Stan, now we need to find out who's fault this is."

I just write it down, edit it a bit, cut out run ons, read what I have and brainstorm the rest of the story, and storm on.
