I recommend anything by Terry Pratchett particularly if its part of Discworld.

I have ( and have read in one awesome 4 week holiday) every book he has published including the co-authored ones

At the moment I'm reading Les Misérables by Victor Hugo and I have really enjoyed it so far. If someone here is not familiar with one of the greatest works of the romantic period, it's about the social results (or lack of them) in France after the French Revolution. It tells the story of a man named Jean Valjean who has just got out of the prison where he had resided for 19 years because he stole a loaf of bread for his sister's starving children. (he was first off convicted for 5 years but the escape attempts postponed his release)

When he gets out, he has changed to a bitter and malicious person and intends to live by crime but he turns to faith when he meets a bishop of Digne who convinces him that he has lived a life of a shadow and that he'd be better off going towards light. The book tells a story of many other characters too but basically it's Valjean's struggle against the unfair justice system and attempts to adjust to the society.

Oh yeah, Les Mis was uber trendy when I was in high school, as was Rent. As far as classics go, I thought MacBeth was interesting, as well as the Scarlet Letter.

Les Miserables was a great book. We studied it in class when I was in grade 12. We also did Macbeth in English 12. I enjoyed both immensely.

One author I would recommend is Michael Chrichton.
